More About Surgicel Absorbable Hemostats

What is Surgicel?

Surgicel is Ethicon's family of absorbable hemostats made from oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC). These products are used as an adjunct to help control capillary, venous and small arterial bleeding when conventional methods are impractical or ineffective. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.

Choosing the right format

  • Original (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955): a knitted sheet that can be cut to size, from 0.5in x 2in to 4in x 8in.
  • Fibrillar (1961, 1962, 1963): layered fibers that can be peeled apart for irregular surfaces.
  • SNoW (2082, 2083): a non-woven structure.
  • Nu-Knit (1943, 1946): a denser knit.
  • Powder (3013SP): a powder format for broad surface areas.

Ordering tips

Reference numbers ending in "S" are typically box configurations, while the base number may be sold individually, so check the purchase unit on each product page. Operating rooms usually keep a few sizes of the knitted sheet on hand and add the fibrillar or powder formats for specialty cases. Search your reference number to check current availability, or contact our team for recurring orders. Not sure which Surgicel format your surgeons use? Send us the reference number on your current box and we will match it.
